30 May 1864 – 5 June 1864
31 May 1864
Mr. Gladstone quoted L. Bloomfield last night in the House of Commons, describing it, according to the Times report, as an ' ex- tremely clever work.' The two lines he gave, apropos of some proposed alteration of the spirit duties, were these : —
Poor Paddy of all Christian men I think On basest food pours down the vilest drink.
(Chap. xii. 11. 296-297.)
I opened the Times in a news-shop and felt a thrill at seeing my own words so unexpectedly.
