I have just read a book called “Carolina Sports by Land and Water; includmg Incidents of Devil-Fishing, Wild-cat, Deer and Bear Hunting, Ete. By the Hon. Wm. Elliott.” The writer is evidently a regular sportsman, and de- scribes his sporting with great zest. He was withal the inventor and institutor of devil-fishing, which consists in harpooning a monstrous salt-water fish, and repre- sents himself in a plate harpooning him. His motive, however, was not profit or a subsistence, but sport.
